Sports injustice?

BOTH Northern Heights basketball teams, girls and boys, made it this season to the Class 3A State Tournament in Hutchinson.
We want to congratulate them and say you did well. It takes many practices and work to get this far.
Emporia High and Olpe also participated in the State tournaments, in their classes. They, too, should be congratulated.
KVOE was biased in reporting all of these games. With Emporia High and Olpe games, the report was quite lengthy. Not a mention of Northern Heights until I called Jeff O’Dell. In the next hour of news, Northern Heights was mentioned. Barely.
I feel this is an injustice to the Northern Heights school teams.
Thank you, 96.1 WAVE radio station for broadcasting all of the Northern Heights Sub-State and State games.
It was much appreciated.

KVOE is a vital information source to the community. When severe weather hits our area its the first place I tune my radio, I feel it helps me stay fresh with the latest information to keep my family safe. It seems to me if 96.1 Wave had the information about your team then you should be thankful one member of the local radio scene had the information and leave it at that. Or was this rant for deeper issues? Its an injustice that they didn't have a certain high school team in a sports cast? SPORTS - Has more impact on American's day to day lives then Saddam did before we invaded. SMD - Sports of Mass Destruction. Sports should be lightharted, fun, and focused on the children. Thats not directed at this conversation but more so at many recent events you see in the sports light.

well elaine smith... 96.1 covered all of northern heights games, did they? just like kvoe covered all of olpe and emporias games. if kvoe is being biased for only covering two teams, which is twice as many as 96.1, then so is 96.1 for only covering northern heights. you see, you are being biased. no matter how big or small a radio station is, they can only do so much. no matter what, no radio station is not going to be able to cover ALL of the area games. if 96.1 is covering northern heights, why would kvoe cover the EXACT same thing that another radio station is already doing.. that just doesnt make any sense. so you are saying that you would rather have two radio stations cover the same game instead of covering two different games... tell me the reasoning behind that because ill bet you couldnt.

Well, Elaine, as I see it, the solution to your dilemna is simple. You just stop listening to that bad old KVOE and listen exclusively to 96.1. You won't be able to receive any information about local news, up to date weather, the time, or community events, but you will teach KVOE a thing or two and be able to hear your local team play when (if) they get to sub-state again.

I BELIEVE THE ISSUE IS...THAT THE SCORE WASN'T BEING GIVEN, AND IT WAS LIKE NORTHERN HEIGHTS HAD PLAYED...THAT KVOE DIDN'T CARE ABOUT NORTHERN HEIGHTS. AM SURE MOST OF THE "POSTINGS" ARE FROM PEOPLE WHO COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT NORTHERN HEIGHTS...AND PROBABLY HOPED NORTHERN HEIGHTS LOST!
DOES SEEM LIKE THE NORTHERN HEIGHTS SCORE AND SUMMARY WOULD HAVE BEEN ON AP...AND KVOE HAS (OR, AT LEAST...USED TO HAVE) AP WIRE.

Come on people. Is this really the best thing you have to argue about? This is the second or third time this year this topic has come up. Let's all move on.

I dont wish ill will on any high school athlete and to jump to the conclusion that I do says alot about you. I dont believe it should be such a heated argument over something that is meant to be a fun activity for the youth. Just be gratefull someone in the town had your games on in the first place.

I think some should go back and re-read. At issue appears to be the amount of reporting rather than what/who broadcasted the game.
I myself feel as though KVOE could have spent a little more time in congratulating the local teams in the area, beyond Olpe and the obvious EHS. Time spent on reporting world events or even weather would most likley not have suffered and perhaps it might have made NHHS's loss sting a smidgeon less.
Congrats to all teams in the area who did so well this year.

elaine, was kvoe supposed to ignore emporia and olpe to broadcast northern heights then?? there are multiple radio stations so that you have choices. I would also say the same as the one respondant above. if you don't like what the station has to offer, go somewhere else. it isn't as if the dial is glued to one station is it? or were you just being that narrow minded that all of us wanted to listen to northern heights instead of emporia?

"KVOE was biased in reporting all of these games." She means reporting the results of the games, not the games themselves. Good grief!

I don't believe that any Northern Heights fans are saying that KVOE was obligated to broadcast the games. We understand staffing issues.
But, if a story is being read the next day during sports telling listeners how local teams fared, should not Northern Heights have been mentioned? Just because KVOE didn't have staff at the games doesn't mean they couldn't have written a story from Web sites.
If nothing else, the state activities association was updating brackets online so a few clicks of the mouse would have given KVOE staff the information they needed.

Cut the Gazette and KVOE some slack. I think they do a GREAT job in covering area HS scores. I follow NHHS and seem to get scores regularly from G and K. These outlets can not be everywhere all the time. Coaches are asked to call in scores which they do not on all occasions. Fans have to help too. Call or e-mail them them at the end of each and every game. Your assistance is needed.

Amazing, even after the obvious is pointed out by several posters on here that she was commenting on the fact that KVOE didn't seem to acknowledge that NHHS was even in the State contest initially, you still want to attack the writer's character. She never said she felt KVOE should have broadcasted the game. Perhaps she felt the local radio station missed the boat by not acknowledging all six Lyon County High School teams that went to the State tournament this year by reporting all of their game highlights. When she called the station to ask why they hadn't reported the NHHS results, O'Dell told her that he wasn't even aware they were in the tournament. Obviously, he's not KVOE's full time sports reporter, but you'd think he'd know that Lyon Co was so well represented this year.

"or were you just being that narrow minded that all of us wanted to listen to northern heights instead of emporia?"
Would be alot easier to get along without implications such as the one above.
