Olpe’s Kathryn Flott goes up for a layup Saturday against Lyndon in the championship game of the Lyon County League Tournament at White Auditorium. Olpe beat Lyndon, 50-37.
This time against Lyndon, Olpe’s offensive execution was better. The passes were more crisp. The press break was more effective.
Kylie Haag said there was one reason.
“Last game was way too close,” the Olpe senior said. “We didn’t want that to happen again.”
The Lady Eagles made sure Saturday’s game wouldn’t come down to the wire, shooting 56 percent in a 50-37 victory over Lyndon in the championship game of the Lyon County League Tournament.
In the teams’ previous meeting, Olpe held on for a 49-44 win in overtime.
The Lady Eagles received an early-game boost from Haag, who scored six first-quarter points to help her team to a 13-8 lead.
The senior was even more valuable in the second quarter when Olpe extended its lead.
Senior forward Megan Woods sat most of the period after picking up her second foul, but the Lady Eagles didn’t miss a beat inside with Haag crashing the boards.
“Without her in there, somebody had to step up,” Haag said. “I just tried to do what I could, and it worked out.”
Haag had three of Olpe’s seven rebounds in the quarter, as the Lady Eagles out-rebounded Lyndon in the frame, 7-1.
The Lady Eagles also dominated the scoreboard, using a 15-5 run in the period to take a commanding 28-13 lead at the break.
“Once you get down 10 or 12 to Olpe, it’s just so hard to come back on them,” Lyndon coach Frank Hart said. “We just buried ourselves too big, too early.”
Erica Brinkman and Woods stepped up in the second half to preserve Olpe’s lead.
Brinkman made all three of her shots in the third period, scoring half of her team’s 12 points.

Olpe’s Erica Brinkman (32) throws her arms in the air after the buzzer sounds to end the Lyon County League Tournament girl’s championship game Saturday evening. Olpe beat Lyndon, 50-37.
The 5-foot-8 senior finished 5-for-6 overall with 11 points.
“It’s so easy to overlook Erica Brinkman,” Olpe coach Jesse Nelson said. “She has just been a kid that has hung in there and hung in there. She’s getting her minutes now, and she makes the most out of them.
“If you broke that game down tonight for somebody doing what they were supposed to do, she probably did the best at it.”
Woods made 4 of 5 shot attempts in the second half to finish with 10 points.
Olpe shot a good percentage from the field, attacking the basket and the Lyndon defense better than it had in the previous matchup.
The Lady Eagles made 23 of their 41 shots.
Haag led Olpe, posting a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
She ended 7-of-10 from the floor and had just one fewer rebound than Lyndon’s entire team (14).
“Kylie’s a kid that has the tools to just take over,” Nelson said. “Sometimes I get disappointed with her or get after her quite a bit because I don’t think she does enough with the tools she has, but I thought she did tonight.”
“With Woods down, I think she just carried us on the boards and did a great job.”
The Lady Eagles dominated the glass, out-rebounding Lyndon, 31-14.
Stephanie Goetz paced Lyndon with 10 points, while Krista Banzhaf added nine.
Kathryn Flott added 10 points for Olpe, which won its third consecutive league tournament title.
“I’m real proud of the group,” Nelson said, “because I thought it was a very good team effort.”

As a long-time Lyon County League fan that has seen many tournaments, this was a good one. There was a lot of good basketball played. As for the Olpe Girls, they were so fun to watch. Looked like a bunch of girls playing hard and having fun. I enjoyed watching them. Keep it going girls!!!!
