Beau Arndt, 18, of Americus was killed Saturday morning as he and a friend were hunting fowl on property in northwest Lyon County.
Lyon County sheriff's deputies worked the scene.
According to information from friends of the families involved, Arndt was hunting with a friend on land near Roads 310 and D. They were hunting fowl with shotguns and had deployed decoys.
The initial, unconfirmed report said that the shot, which apparently was from a rifle, came from an old pickup truck that was passing by on the roadway.
Lyon County Sheriffs are looking for a late 1970's Ford pickup with a red cab and three different sized quarter panels and with an orange bed. The truck was seen a few minutes before the incident and within a couple miles of the site and was said to be occupied by four males. The truck has Shawnee County plates.
Arndt graduated from Northern Heights High School in May.
If you have seen this truck or have information, call the Lyon County Sheriff's department at 342-5545.

Such an unneccessary tragedy. That is exactly why I carry a small orange flag when goose hunting. If a truck slows down a flag goes up. Too many people in this county like to drive around with rifles and shoot at stuff. Look at the road signs.
No only that, but shooting waterfowl with a rifle is illegal by federal law.

I hope who did turn themselves in they not only killed a young man but messed up others lifes forever. My nephew was one of the hunters now he will have that burned in his brain forever because someone was breaking the law and thought they would be cool be a man and turn your self in to the law

Beau was an exceptional young man, I will miss him dearly.
Please do not call the piece of human garbage that shot him a hunter, he was not. He is a criminal, a game slob, a poacher, a bottom dwelling piece of slime, not a hunter.
The shooter was doing what too many people consider to be an acceptible form of hunting during the gun seasons, riding around in a warm vehicle, shooting illegally from the road onto property where they have no permission to be, out of season, and with no concern for safety or other game regulations.
I hope the law enforcement agencies involved can quickly apprehend the suspect and bring justice to the Arndt family. My heart goes out to them.

Such a tragedy. May God bless his family and friends in this difficult time and through the holidays. Finding who did it will not bring Beau back, but maybe it will help heal some of the wounds. I hope that they can find the strength, courage and conscience to turn themselves in.
I hope this serves as a lesson to those who drive around and shoot from their windows. You never know who might be out in the fields you are shooting into. Take gun safety seriously! Guns don't kill people, PEOPLE kill people.
God bless the Arndts.

My heart goes out to the Arndt family. The person who did this will be found and when he is should be given the max and then some. I am A hunter and often worry about such things when afield, when no one ever should! This lazy coward will be found if not by his own guilt eating at him then by GOD and LAW!

As Beau would say...we grew up over the river and through the woods from each other. He has and will always have a special place in my heart. We've been through about everything together over the years. Wheather we were jumping from haybale to haybale, going to a k-state basketball game, fishing, struggling through algebra, or just goofing around...it was always a great time with him. He was the nicest and most polite young man I have ever met. I hope that who ever did this gets caught. Because a great friend, neighbor, and classmate was taken from me and everyone else today.
My heart goes out to all who was affected today by this tragic incident.

My family was really good friends with Beau and the rest of his family! He was best friends with my brother and he seemed like a brother to me!! I couldnt have asked for a better friend to have! The Arndt's are in my prayers and i love and miss him terriably! but God has plans for our lives and unfortunately God needed Beau with him. But now we all have a sweet, caring, respectful, young guardian angel that will be in our hearts forever!!

Arndt is one of hundreds of people who died this year due to gun abuse. Too many people are dying because of guns. Humans do not need to hunt to survive anymore, as this nation provides enough food for everyone. Why even hunt? How sick can you hunters be to get pleasure out of shooting a living creature just to watch it die to make you feel good? There should be a prison time given and psycho therapy with mandatory education for gun owners. If there has to be a change in law, it should start with gun control and that should be the new years resolution to US. There needs to be gun control in every state. People should shut down gun producers and guns should be taken away from all people. Even cops should start using only tranquilizers. People, destroy your guns and buy books to educate yourself. Its 2008, guns dont show you are powerful, it just makes you a sick and evil person, even if its a cop having a gun, you all know tranquilizers/tasers work good enough, why cant you use them yourself.

Beau was a great friend to have. I didn't get to hunt or hang out with him near enough. May God be with friends and family and help us through such a hard time.
As for aasimsaied's post: real nice of you to bash hunters when a great person dies doing something he loved. It's not the time or place for your remarks, nor for me to argue with you so I'll leave it at shame on you. And you say hunters are sick...

I am so sorry for the loss suffered by the Arndt family. The loss of someone so young and evidently so well loved is hard to understand. With lots of faith and prayers the family will get through this troubled time. They will never forget, but with God's help and the support of family they will have the strength to go on. I didn't know Beau, but I know some of his family and I know they will miss him terribly.
I have never hunted a day in my life and couldn't kill unless I was in fear of my life, however, aasimsaied's comments make me want to own a gun. Pompous comments like aasimsaied's are inappropriate at this time.

Beau was a dear friend and a true friend. He meant alot of things to alot of different people. He had a big heart and was respected by many. He will greatly be miss and his friendship no matter what it was will also be miss. My heart goes out to EVERYONE envolved with this and the families of them too. A wise man once told me that what you can only live with your conscience so long and whomever did this will get what they have coming.
To the Arndt family my thought and prayers are with you all at this time. To the other families you are also in my prayers. God bless all hunters.

Its one thing to miss someone, but knowing that you will never get a chance to see them ever again is tough to grasp. Beau was the nicest person I have ever known. He was an easy person to like, he was simply a people pleaser. And while my time knowing Beau was short, I thank God for blessing me with such an amazing individual. It's so unfair for anyone that knew him, and for those who didn't get the chance to meet him because he was such a happy-go-lucky person.
To his little brother and sister: I'm sorry! I can't imagine the pain you are feeling at this very moment. It's tough to realize that such an amazing big brother was taken from you so early, and I'm sure you have a lot of questions right now. And to the rest of the family, be proud of the son you raised. In this short time here on earth he touched the lives of so many people, he was loved by all. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.
To the person whom shot Beau: I hope this is eating away at you at this very moment. Shooting, while hunting from the road, by law, is illegal- but leaving the scene of an accident is also extremely illegal, and foolish. You will get caught, and I hope you get what you deserve. Not only did you ruin the life of one individual, you ruined it for his family, friends, and those closest to him. You've taken away something from these people they will never get back. Be a man fess up for your foolish mistake.
And I would have to agree, was bashing on hunters really necessary? Beau was a hunter, and he loved the sport. This isn't about giving up hunting at all, its about a dumb slob who can't follow the rules.

What a horrible tragedy! Whether or not this young man was hunting has nothing to do with his death. He could have been out in the field bird watching or taking a morning walk. However, the person who fired the fatal shot was doing something other posters have indicated is common in this area. Perhaps Aasimsaied posted the gun control rant because he is just as outraged as we all are that people in our community are driving around shooting from their cars!
May the family of this child be blessed with divine peace.

Is there a better description of the truck? Any progress on finding the shooter? Everyone needs to keep their eyes peeled, road hunters can travel a pretty wide distance, we have had them from as far away as Wichita.
This isn't the time to knock gun owners or hunting. Without hunting wildlife numbers would be unmanageable. Animals don't die in their sleep anyway, usually if they are not killed by hunters they starve, get eaten by other animals, die of disease, or are roadkill. Hunting is a sport that helps manage wildlife. It is a much better activity for young men to engage in than many others I can think of.
Road hunters and road hunting is an altogether different matter. In this case people being slobs has cost the life of a young man. My sympathy to the Arndt family.

Assim, an assuare. A fine young man was cut down in the springtime of his life; not by a gun, but by a mentally deficient human with a gun. Your comments were cruel, ridiculous, illiterate, uninformed, and un-American. Shame on you.

Meanwhile, deputies are still looking for a regular-sized late 1970s Ford pickup with a red cab and quarter panels and an orange bed. Stevenson says the truck was seen a few minutes before the incident and within a couple miles of the site.
The truck has a Shawnee County tag but the number hasn't been released yet.
Stevenson says four males were inside, according to at least one witness. The driver was wearing braces but no other descriptions have been released.
If you have seen this truck, call the Lyon County sheriff's department at 342-5545.

aasimsaied thanks for saying all the unnecessary comments.... you really know how to put people down and another thing my good friend passed away because he was doing something he loved so don't for one second think that you can say all of that...
Beau you were a great person and I hope you look over all of us and thanks for being a good friend...

My prayers go out to the family of this young man. Hopefully these IDIOTS will be caught and justice will be served. From the postings about Beau, it seems he was a very nice young man and will be deeply missed.

although these conversations are relevant, significant, and ultimately inevitable given the situation, i think that for the moment we should stay any debates or opinions regarding hunting and/or gun policy. For now, there is a much more significant matter at hand, which is simply that a young man has died.
Best,
C.I.

God, please be with this family in this most difficult time and help them to see that they will join him in the glorious heavens above someday. Help them to understand that this is just a tempory seperation. I pray that they can accept that you needed a wonderful and powerful angel by your side to fight against evil and so you had to call upon him. I pray that they can eventualy come to grips with this tragedy and realize that he is blessed and this is a great honor to be called upon to join you in the heavens above. I ask that you be by the family's side to give them comfort and not let their faith be crumbled. I ask this of you Lord in Jesus name. Amen

This is such a horrible loss to me and all of my friend who had went to school with Beau since we were little. Everytime I saw him we would always talk and he always seemed to care how people were doing. He had the biggest heart. I don't think he had any enemies. He was a sweet kid. Now because of someone being careless, his life was taken at such a young age. He was just being his journey of life. To the person who did this, if they don't catch you know they will someday because it will eat at you the rest of your life and god will always no that you did. So i hope you can be a man a stand up to the thing that you did.
To the Arndt family, I've so very sorry abou this and my prayers and thoughts are with you.

I don't know this young man but my thoughts and prayers are with you and the family of this obviously beloved individual. Hunters are a sort of brotherhood. I heard about this terrible tragedy on a hunting site. There are many of us out there thinking of all of you. God Bless!
