Hello everyone,
I'm giving all The Gazette readers the chance to voice their opinions on what made the biggest sports news splash in the area this year.
Was it Clint Bowyer winning his first Nextel Cup race and finishing third in The Chase? Was it the ESU women's basketball team's amazing comeback against Washburn on national TV? Or was it the Emporia High football team's comeback against Junction City that propelled the Spartans into the State playoffs?
Post your vote here for the top sports story of the year for our area and your reason why you chose it. Remember, area high school stories count too, so yes, Olpe's 24-point comeback against Madison a few weeks ago could make our list.
Then, on Saturday, Dec. 29, check out The Gazette for the Top 10 Sports Stories of the Year for our area. We will consider nominations from everyone.
OK, so let's see those nominations.

I think the EHS Spartan football team's win over the undefeated Junction City Bluejays was the top sports story of 2007. A hard-working group of players who were undersized for their competition gave it their whole heart---even when they were down by 15 points. They believed in themselves and never gave up! They brought a district championship back to Emporia after a drought of almost ten years!

I think the ESU volleyball team quietly working their way into the top fifteen and making it to the regional semi-final is an underatted story.

I think the Lady Hornets comeback was huge. To come back after being down 16 points to a top ten team (that happens to be your hated rival) and win was great! It put Emporia on a national stage with the broadcast by CSTV. I had friends from around the country text me after the game asking if it was as loud in White Auditorium as it came across on TV.
Another one to look at would be the Hornet baseball team winning two games at Central Missouri to win the MIAA championship.

My first thought would have been to vote for Clint Bowyer since he is an Emporia kid that has reached an amazing level of success that you don't see very often (at least not in Emporia).
DJ brought up the volleyball team and I have to say that Emporia's home win over Washburn was absolutely amazing. The crowd was outstanding. Those girls played lights out, and I am excited to see what they can do next year as well being that they were such a young team this year and yet so talented and dominating.
It's a tough choice - gotta be proud of all the great accomplishments of these athletes.

As a reminder, you do not have to vote for the options I listed above. Those were merely suggestions. You can write in your own nominations too. I just wanted to clarify that.

Stories about Kansas and Kansas State are not being considered. Only local stories.

It has to be Clint's success this year. It sure helped put Emporia on the map. Every week you'd here about his great accomplishments and the respect that he has earned from all the great drivers in just a short time.

The top story has to be between the EHS football victory over Junction and/or the determination shown by the EHS boys Cross Country team and Michala (sp) Reynolds come back to take first again after a sickness her Jr year sidetracker her 3-peat. Go Spartans!!

My vote would go for the Lady Hornets win over Washburn. White auditorium was rocking like no other!
A close second would the the volleyball victory over WU. The crowd there that day was impressive as well.

I would say Clint Bowyer, but not just for his win, but how he got to that point. His influence on kids, to give them a direction and what can be achieved if you work hard enough. After, that I would say the Spartan football team and all their accomplishments.
