An angry Coach Moe yells at an official Wednesday night at White Auditorium before being removed from the Emporia State Newman game. Moe knocked over the opposing team's Gatorade on his way out of the game. The Hornets lost to Newman, 93-89 in overtime.
Emporia State Athletic Director Kent Weiser has suspended men’s basketball coach David Moe one game for his actions in Wednesday’s game against Newman.
Moe received two technical fouls with 54.6 seconds left, then went out on the court to argue face-to-face with officials. Moe later knocked over Newman’s water cooler on his way to the locker room.
“Even though collegiate athletics is intense and can at times be highly emotional, it is important that coaches and players keep their emotions in check,” Weiser said in a release. “I appreciate Coach Moe’s intensity, but in this case, our expected levels of sportsmanship were compromised.”
ESU assistant coach Ben McCollum will assume the head-coaching duties for the Hornets’ game Saturday at No. 22 Nebraska-Omaha.
“First and foremost, I want to apologize to the University, President (Michael) Lane, my players, our fans and the Emporia community,” Moe said in a release. “I can’t change what happened, but we are all responsible for our actions, and you just can’t act that way.
“With as much character as we have as a team, the head coach can’t go out and act like an idiot. I’m embarrassed, but we’ll learn from it and work to set a better example.”

The worst one-sided officiating in the history of the world!!! At home no less- I agree, Coach Moe should be suspended, but so should two of those officials!!!

I agree.....I think it could of been an illegal substitution allowed

The Gazette should have a reader poll asking,
"HOW MANY REALLY GIVE A DAMN?"
Emporia has more problems that should take preference now, get the problems fixed and then go play, ya ya I know, its a thing that relaxes and takes away from the real stress that life throws at ya, damn get rid of a half dozen asst. coaches and the school could probably afford to fix some of the building that are falling apart, OK let me hear it from all the wanta be jocks, real jocks, coaches, and I am sure some of those very smart liberal students, will tell me something also, but getting back to why I posted, I DONT REALLY GIVE A DAMN , MAYBE THE COACH NEEDS TO GET A JOB!!

Please don't worry about me, and, I don't give a damn!!!
Also, I agree with you on your other post about the damn stupid music, wonder why they never play country music loud going down the streets????? they don't realize it but I DONT like their music, if thats what they call it.... i just love these posts on a nasty day out side.........................

Oh give me a break people! Moe is a fine coach and the MIAA officials are perhaps the worst in collegiate sports. I can't believe Weiser suspended him for this--oh wait, I can. We wouldn't want to offend the tender sensibilities of Hornet fans. I think ESU sports in general would benefit from a greater level of emotion.

Right on bobhornet!!!!!

Is there not a process to complain about bad officials? Can they not work within the system to fix it? Does being treated unfairly justify acting like a spoiled child and being threatening in a physical way?
Also, if they're going to blast recorded music, why take up the Hornet Revue's valuable study time and intefere with their holiday breaks? I wasn't there - maybe they use the canned music only when the live music isn't available. If Sonic can rotate between oldies, country and pop, (I love going to Sonic) then the B-Ball DJ can do the same...

go bobhornet, I couln't agree more. I think he showed that he really cares about his guys and he was defending his team against generaly below average officiating. Maybe he went a little too far!
Hillbilly, you give a damn enough to read the article and take the time to voice that you don't give a damn. You just don't understand that nobody gives a damn that you don't give a damn.

By the way last nite was one of the most exciting ball games in the country and it was involving a nationally ranked Emporia State
team.......and the headlines are: NEWMAN UNIVERSITY JETS won in overtime!!!!!!!! The EAGLE has not documented coverage of ESU's Head Coach Moe displaying totally inexcusable actions where he threw NEWMAN's full water cooler out on to the court, after he was asked to leave the arena because he foolishly drew
two technical fouls in the second half. The way he rode the ref's the whole game....he was lucky they didn't have the courage to do it much earlier in the game.....what an idiot! The ref's may have not been the best but there is NO EXCUSE for him to make "Bobby Knight's chair escapade" look like a minor incident......he was totally out of control, even chesting bumping officials twice! His own players had to practically pull him off the court! I looked in amazement...where were his assistants or the AD in getting this idiot off the floor....incredibly amazing!!! He should be disciplined by the NCAA and his institution! I see where ESU did slap his wrist with one game....crazy again. Right after the national anthem, he and some of the crowd must not have been listening to the public address announcer who "spoke of good sportsmanship while participating and attending in White Memorial Auditorium".
The small Newman entourage received taunts and comments to "sit down and shut up" after NEWMAN buckets?!?!??! That was by an mid 50's man not a young college fanatic being a college kid at a game. I will say that Coach Potter, his players and the Emporia State players all acted responsibly and played the game
hard with enthusiasm. Very good college basketball game.....besides the fact the officials really didn't keep control of their Coach from the beginning. He missed a very exciting and loud ending while sitting in the locker room. His X and O knowledge could have helped win the game but he has issues...out of control anger! One can only hope he is a bit embarrassed and apologies first to NEWMAN, his players and to the university for which employees him. I do believe that EMPORIA STATE is also a STATE FUNDED university also....it's sad my taxes help somehow pay his salary. Very sad!

OK let's stick to facts please.
1. He did not throw a "full water cooler out on to the court". He did knock over a cooler that had mostly ice left in it and it fell onto the floor beyond the baseline. If it had been full of water I would assume that it would have spread over the court and not been confined to the corner of the arena.
2. He did not chest bump any official and did not make contact with any official.
Again not condoning his actions, but would like to keep to the facts.

Also to clarify that the AD did just set at the table and watch and did not bother taking control of his employee, but the assistant coach Ben McCollum did go out and attempt to get Moe away from the officials (or lack of officials) and to get him off the court before he was tossed. Moe did intentionally pull the water cooler off of the stand, it was not an accident.

I really feel that we could put alot of our frustrations into emails and send them to the new MIAA commissioner and encourage him to watch the film and see just how bad the league officials are. The old commissioner did not care, but hopefully with a new one we will see improvement.

I completely agree with bobhornet's comments as well. Many fans at the ESU bb and fb games look like they're at home watching the game on tv. how boring.

I am a long time ESU fan and its proud tradition in athletics. But suspending Coach Moe for only 1 game is an insult. This is not the first time that Coach Moe has brought negative publicity to the basketball program. 2 years ago his behavior at the Washburn game overshadowed a hard fought game. His language and behavior at one of the MIAA tournament games in KC required families with children to move from behind our bench. He should be demonstrating good sportanship and restraint to the players and fans. ESU needs another leader for the Basketball program.

Most Coaches use bad language ! This not going to change , unless some people stand up! Kids barely graduate from ESU B-Ball team. Ask the AD what is the graduation rate for the kids who transfer in from other schools or Juco transfers , 10% if we are lucky. Coach yelling and screaming is not as important as are these kids graduating from College and the answer is a big NO !!!!!!! If you want to complain about something complain about that ! OOPS sorry nobody cares about that !! Ask the President or the AD to look that up!

its the teachers fault that the kids are not graduating or the Somalians. Might even be the songs they play at the football games. Might even be because Coach Moe tipped over the gatorade jug. Maybe we should get rid of sports all together and just go watch the fraternity's play. I hear that they are really good.

Ed Desir and Donta Watson from last year's team both graduated and the other senior Scott Elliott is finishing up this year.
From 2006 I know that Shawn Herrman and Ryan Blevins both graduated and I don't know about Tyrell Sledge or Anthony Joseph.
From 2005 Scott Hahn, Jay Miller, Brady Webb and Trent Schnakenberg all graduated and to the best of my knowledge Deshawn Anderson did not.
So out of 12 seniors in the last three years, that's eight graduated, one is getting ready to and three did not. That's 67% right now and will be 75% once Scott walks. Six of the guys I listed were transfers and once Elliott walks, three of them will have graduated - that's 50% - not 10%.
Last fall the men's basketball team had a 3.02 team GPA which was the highest of all the men's teams at ESU.
Do you have any idea what the graduation rate is for all students at ESU? It's like 44%.

Beth -
Thank you for providing accurate information. These forums are so annoying when people spout off incorrect information because they think it helps their point when all it does is hurt their credibility.
Why did the graduation rate issue even come up here? Guess what people - these players are ADULTS and it is THEIR responsibility to graduate - it is not the responsibility of the AD, the coach or even the president of the college to make sure they graduate. Last time I checked, people still had to EARN a degree. Personal responsibility - it's a beautiful thing. I'm not dogging the players here because I appreciate what they do, the time they put in and the sacrifices they make to help our sports teams be successful and I'm impressed that they can do as well in classes as they do with the time commitment of a college sport - I'm calling out the people who think it is someone else's responsibility to make sure everyone graduates. This isn't high school - no one is going to hold your hand and make sure you do your homework so you graduate - they shouldn't have to.

beth, have you ever been in any college classes where there are jocks, players, in that class?? I will go out on a limb, and say, probably not,,,, I have been in a lot of classes over many years here and have often wondered why a lot of them get a pass...................and please, don't come back and tell me that its not true, or I don't know what I am talking about.

I think he made a very unprofessional and ugly decision with his actions and feel his apology is more pathethic than what he did. One game suspension is not enough IMO, I would like to see ESU consider other candidates for the job.

So why suspend the basketball coach when the A.D did nothing to the football coaches for their continued foal language to the players this year? Does it has to be obvious to everyone before something is done?

UsayuluvGod... Anthony Joseph did graduate and I am assuming the men's team will have seven more this year..Moe is one of two coaches in the conf. to have a winning record in all of the last five seasons also has the third most wins of any coach in the conference over the last five years.. the incident was embarrassing but we have a lot more complainers than supporters or factual information

I realized that we are talking about a certain coach actions but I really don't care how he acts because no one will do anything about it and to me that is part of the problem. Screaming at the Refs will get you one or two extra calls but overall you will lose some respect from them also. Refs do talk about the coaches who are crazy and they know how to handle them, Give them 2 techs and send them home. But what is more important ,is teaching the Players to become better players and Young Men on and off of the Court.
