GAME UPDATE: Newman 93, ESU 89 — FINAL, OT

Emporia High graduate Lucas Morgan helps sink ESU with 3-pointer in OT

Originally published 07:01 p.m., December 5, 2007
Updated 07:01 p.m., December 5, 2007

Newman was held scoreless during a 6-minute, 45-second stretch midway through the first half.

DeAndre Townsend had 24 points for ESU.

ESU's leading scorer Wes Book has left the game with an injury to his right thumb.

ESU trailed 74-67 with 54.6 seconds left but rallied to tie it on a 3-pointer by Andrew Davison with 2.7 seconds left.

Newman's Lucas Morgan — an Emporia High grad — gave the Jets the lead at 87-84 with just over a minute left in OT.

The Jets wouldn't trail after that.

Newman, now a D-II affiliate, is 3-1 against D-II Universities. ESU loss will be big when it comes to end of season quest for D-II regional slot

The N.C.A.A. needs to send Moe to anger management classes. What an embarrassment to have a little kid coaching a college team.

Go easy on Coach Moe. He didn't get thrown out of any games last year. You really have to appreciate that when Moe does get kicked out of a game that he makes the exit memorable.

At least it was the opposing team's Gatorade.

We were only down by 3 and had posession of the ball. I am sure that in retrospect, Moe regrets his decisions. I hope he apologizes to the Stingers. They got wet after he threw the water on them.

The only thing I could think of is how embarrassing…

While Moe was trying to do his best Bobby Knight impersonation I felt a overwhelming sense of shame and embarrassment. It is amazing how one individual can embarrass a school, a town, and his own players without a second thought. If he had stopped after throwing his hissy fit on the court that would be easier to accept as an emotional coach or a lapse in judgment. But after walking down the court and knocking over stuff… that is unacceptable. I did not see the Stingers get hit by the Gatorade, but if they did moe should immediately apologize to them. And if he can find the time, he should apologize to the rest of us.

My point is I would not accept this behavior from a three year old so why should we accept it from a professional. President Lane has done a lot of good things in his short time at ESU, lets hope he removes this black eye. Would anyone else sign a petition to get moe out of here?

I feel that Moe should be fined and suspended, if not fired. We all know that he does not want to be here, he wants to be in Colorado. I feel that if the athletic director does not take control of this situation that President Lane should take a close look at that position also. We all know that if a student or fan would do anything close to a fit like that the AD would have been on them and sent them out the door for the season, instead he sits at the table and watches the show.

I'm not certain how we expect our kids in school to get along with others, avoid conflict, and control their temper with role models like this right in front of their eyes. Some will say "give him a break" or "that's just the way an emotional coach is"... yet I'm pretty certain if I exhibited this behavior at my job, I'd be shown the door. I admire great passion in any profession, yet maturity must also be a top priority!

There is no excuse for that kind of behavior. If he was out on the sidewalk acting like that, he would be tasered and jailed. If he can't act professionally then he needs to go. What a bad example, and it reflects on the university and society as whole that we are willing to let people in athletics act this way.

How many of you that are commenting were actually at the game? I am not condoning coach Moe's behavior, but to say he would be "tasered and jailed" is just a bit overboard.

i dumped gatorade out one time outside and a cop was sitting right there. Didn't get tasered or jailed. Plus i said a bad word. I think all the great minds on this blog should come up with a solution to solve this problem.

I was at the game and was embarrassed to be a student at ESU with his antics, it was something you would expect of a kid still in diapers.

My only problem with Coach Moe is why did it take so long to get a technical!!! I think he used great restraint for a long time. I would have gotten a technical way before that. You can't let what went on go last night go on. Sometimes you just have to do something because it needs to be done. Should he have dumped the water on the floor, of course not but in the long run, this incident will make this team better. So all of you idotic people that are on your high horse and preaching "he shouldn't act that way" GET OFF!!! You must have never competed in anything. To Coach Moe: thanks for showing the passion for your kids and to ESU!!!

kublue: You just mentioned in another post that you believe Moe should be suspended, yet criticize those who are mentioning how unprofessional his behavior was? I'm confused. So do you think he should have acted that way or not?

Personally I have competed in athletics and I learned more from coaches who taught me respect, restraint and that life ain't always fair and the call doesn't always go your way, but that's life. It's called class.

Moe himself said: "With as much character as we have as a team, the head coach can’t go out and act like an idiot. I’m embarrassed, but we’ll learn from it and work to set a better example".

I'm just defending my post and stating the obvious. He was over the top. He admits it, we should move on and hope for better behavior.

As far as solving the problem..well I dunno..maybe anger management classes?!! :)

When I was walking into the bball game last night a car drove by and was playing the song that says "superman that hoe". I think they should get tasered and jailed. I might not go to another game if i'm going to hear that in the streets.

You people are nuts! Moe is the best thing to happen to men's basketball at ESU in some time. So he lost his temper--so what! It's actually refreshing to see someone out there actually fighting for his team against the pathetic MIAA refs. It's high time that ESU fans and our milque-toast AD show some passion for Hornet athletics. He apologized--let him coach!

I do believe a one game suspension was appropriate, he will set out the game, and come back and lead this team. I do not think a bunch of people should get up on their soap box and start preaching on how a person should act when they have never been in that situation before! It was a very intense game and he lost his cool. I myself would have done the same thing, but a couple of minutes sooner. I believe the MIAA should also looking into the situation with their officials. Two of those officials did not belong on the floor. But enough on that. We need to root on ESU basketball the rest of the year!!! GO HORNETS

WHERE DID HE APOLOGIZE TO NEWMAN UNIVERSITY....COACH POTTER AND HIS ASSISTANTS......AND TO NEWMAN PLAYERS WHO AS YOUNG MEN HAD TO WITNESS THAT???????? VERY CLASSLESS AND NCAA OUGHT TO LOOK INTO THIS THEMSELVES! ESU PRESIDENT NEEDS TO CHECK OUT THE GAME FILM AND SEE WHERE HIS A.D. WAS DURING ALL OF THIS?!?! HE'S RESPONSIBLE TO TAKE CARE OF HIS EMPLOYEES AND GET HIM OFF THE COURT! EVERYONE SEEMS INDIMIDATED BY THIS GUY. HIS APOLOGY WAS "SO SCRIPTED" OF A RESPONSE......NOT GENUINE AT ALL!

One other thing........this was an exciting college basketball game!!!!!! Couldn't there be more content to the description of the game?!?!?!? Sad........you wrote more about Moe than a great game!

I don't know how many times I have to explain this. This IS NOT the final game story. This is simply a live game update, as it is clearly stated in the headline, to let people know how the game went. The final story will come out in today's paper.

Also to clarify that the AD did just set at the table and watch and did not bother taking control of his employee, but the assistant coach Ben McCollum did go out and attempt to get Moe away from the officials (or lack of officials) and to get him off the court before he was tossed. Moe did intentionally pull the water cooler off of the stand, it was not an accident

I really feel that we could put alot of our frustrations into emails and send them to the new MIAA commissioner and encourage him to watch the film and see just how bad the league officials are. The old commissioner did not care, but hopefully with a new one we will see improvement.

Sounds like jasonesu has a constructive idea there.
