Hartford’s Cody Barrett broke a fourth-quarter tie, providing the game-winning 4-yard touchdown run as Hartford hung on for a 20-14 victory over Burlingame.
Still, it was the play of the Jaguars defense that was crucial in the latter stages of the game.
Hartford intercepted a Burlingame pass and also recovered a fumble in the fourth quarter, which helped keep the score tied.
“The defense came up big for us,” Hartford assistant coach Chuck Ewy said.
Barrett’s TD run came with just under 4 minutes remaining.
The 5-foot-8 running back also scored in the first quarter, returning a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
John Sliter had the other Hartford score, catching an 11-yard TD strike from quarterback Adam Ewy.
Burlingame dominated the rushing statistics, finishing with 252 rushing yards to Hartford’s 78.
Turnovers doomed the Bearcats, however, as they lost three fumbles and also an interception.
Quarterback Chris Patterson led Burlingame, rushing 17 times for 127 yards.
Adam Ewy was 7-for-15 passing for 100 yards.

Northern Heights 51,
Herington 20
Northern Heights quarterback Kenneth Bronson threw for four scores as the Wildcats took the easy victory over Herington.
The quarterback’s status was uncertain after an injury in last week’s game against West Elk.
“He had a tender ankle, but he got over it pretty good,” Heights co-coach Greg French said. “He healed up pretty fast from it, luckily.”
It sure looked that way Friday, as Bronson completed 16 of 21 passes for 215 yards.
“He did play well. He was 16 of 21, and you can’t ask for much better than that,” French said. “He was real accurate and did a good job of finding open receivers.”
The Wildcats scored 16 in the first quarter before exploding for 28 in the second to take a commanding 44-12 halftime lead.
Michael Glass rushed 11 times for 132 yards and a touchdown, while Haydon Parks and Tyler McClellan were the main beneficiaries of Bronson’s throws.
Parks finished with five catches for 51 yards and three TDs, while McClellan had six receptions for 101 yards and a score.
“We’re clicking pretty well offensively,” French said. “We’re balancing things out. Michael Glass is running well when he’s running it. The offensive line is doing well also.”
Heights (2-2) travels to face Council Grove next week.

The Olpe Eagles had a good night on Friday, handing West Elk its first loss of the season.

Olpe quarterback Matt Redeker completed 6 of 19 passes for 54 yards, which was five yards short of West Elk’s passing total.
Josh Lambert showed off his skills rushing the football. He ended the game with 23 rushes for 63 yards.

Luthi scored on runs of 4, 15, 4 and 10 yards to lead the Bulldogs.

Madison’s Eric Porter added a strong individual performance of his own, rushing 11 times for 132 yards and two TDs.
Charlie Schlotterbeck and Ben Dains had the other rushing touchdowns for the Bulldogs.
MdCV, meanwhile, was the first team this season to break through offensively against Madison.
Through three games, the Bulldogs defense had not been scored upon.
Madison (4-0) will face undefeated Waverly at home in a much-anticipated game next Friday.
“I would say we just need to keep getting better,” Schultz said. “We let a lot of runs get away from us. We’re going to work on tackling a lot this week.”

Miami (Mo.) 28
The Waverly Bulldogs picked up their fourth victory of the season Friday night against Miami (Mo.).
The game was called because of lightning with 4:10 remaining in the third quarter, but that still gave the Bulldogs plenty of time to take their 44-point victory.

“I thought he played real well,” Waverly assistant coach Jay Biggs said. “He did a good job executing our offense.”
Senior Dakota Foster also was a major contributor Friday night. Foster was responsible for four touchdowns and nine carries for a total of 230 yards. He led the team with a total of 267 yards on offense.

One of the most impressive players that I have seen is a Lebo High Senior name Brandon Speer. He is one of the hardest hitting players that I have seen. Not only that he is in on every play either making the tackle or assisting. The coach for Lebo should utilize him more on offense then what he has been doing. The kid is fast, cuts quick and hardly ever drops a pass. This is one kid that brings excitement to the game.
