Financial Peace University is offered in Emporia

Saturday, September 13, 2008

Financial Peace University, a 13-week program taught by Dave Ramsey, will be offered in Emporia beginning Sept. 24.

According to a news release, the program has helped more than 650,000 families improve their financial future.

The program teaches families and individuals how to handle their money through common-sense principles and small-group accountability. The Emporia classes will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 828 Commercial St. The classes will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 24. Call Carolyn Lackey at 342-4706 or e-mail lueckelackey@prodigy.net for more information or to register.

According to the news release, the average family that completes the program pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in the first 91 days after beginning the classes and is completely out of debt, except for the mortgage, in 18 to 24 months.

“We’ve actually relieved ourselves of over $50,000 worth of debt in two years just from using these principles,” said Russ Lee, former participant.

Dave Ramsey began teaching the classes in 1994 around Nashville, Tenn. In 1997, FPU was made available on video.

The program is made up of 13 lessons taught by Ramsey. After each lesson, the group meets to help each other plan budgets, discuss successes and temptations and support each other in their journey to beat debt and build wealth.

Topics covered include: saving for emergencies, budgeting, relationship and money issues, buying big bargains, getting out of debt, understanding investments, understanding insurance, retirement and college planning, buyer beware. real estate mortgages and careers and extra jobs.

Each family participating in the class needs a kit which costs about $100. Some scholarships are available for the Emporia classes. The cost of the kit is a lifetime family membership to FPU, allowing the participant to return to any class at any time for a refresher course. The kit also includes an FPU workbook, an FPU envelope system, 13 audio lessons, bonus CD, budgeting forms, debit card holders, and Ramsey’s best-selling book, “Financial Peace.”

Is Ramsey himself going to be appear? Or is it just his FPU videotapes, for which families have to pay the hundred bucks to see (and receive the other products)? It's an important distinction.

Who is this "former participant" Russ Lee? Does he live in Emporia? Or elsewhere? Did this quote come from the press release? Getting out from under $50,000 in debt in two years, for the average family, is an extraordinary claim. Context is needed.

Ok does anyone else see the irony of having to pay $100 to have someone tell you to QUIT spending so much money??

When will we get Dave Ramsey's radio program? maybe in place of some of Bruce Williams.---I am getting tired of him. Ramsey is on every afternoon on the Salina station, but KVOE can surely get this too. His ideas are excellent.
He is on satellite tv ( channel 355, I think) every night.
