6 devices in County earn perfect marks

Saturday, September 6, 2008

Three gas and/or diesel fuel stations in Emporia and several in Lyon County came through the testings with perfect scores, showing all “approved” results for each of their pumps on each inspection date for the period from Jan. 1, 2006, to the present.

The testing results for Lyon County sites were provided by The Gazette after an open-records request was filed.

The stations with perfect scores are, in alphabetical order and with inspection periods:

• Allen S & S Oil & Propane Cardlock gas station, Third and Main, Allen, March 12, 2007, to July 3, 2008

• Brecheisen Oil, 108 Plumb, Hartford, Nov. 9, 2006, to July 3, 2008

• Casey’s, 126 S. Commercial St., Oct. 6, 2006, to May 15, 2008

• Casey’s, 1402 E. Sixth Ave., March 13, 2007, to May 22, 2008

• Casey’s, 404 Main St., Americus, March 13, 2007, to July 3, 2008

• Kwik Shop, 105 W. 12th Ave., March 8, 2007, to July 14, 2008

• S & S Oil & Propane Cardlock, Reading, March 12, 2007, to July 3, 2008

• S & S Oil & Propane Cardlock, Admire, March 12, 2007, to July 3, 2008

The report showed the results totals listed below for other stations in Lyon County. Addresses are listed in the order of appearance on the state report.

The number of pumps at each station varies, and re-inspections necessitated by complaints or 30-day follow-up testings are included.

(Because ownerships and business names have changed for several of the stations, but state records do not have the updated names, only addresses of the gas stations will be used.)

A number of stations showed problems with “totalizers,” which are devices on the storage tanks that record the amount of fuel that has come from the tanks.

They are for inventory purposes only. Those problems, however, are included in the reports from the inspectors.

“We do flag it if the totalizer isn’t working properly,” said Lewis Hutfels, technical inspector for the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s weights and measures division.

“It has nothing to do with the accuracy of the pump.”

Looks like • 2900 Eaglecrest (SHELL) has problems with 24 approved, 26 rejected specifications (short hoses, several octane labels need replaced, numerous other unspecified reasons).

I filled my tank on 9/11 at this SHELL station, because I simply needed gas that day. This station tripled its price (or more) that day (such patriots). I reported them to the State of KS for gouging and went to the station to ask to speak to the manager. I was told that the manager was too busy to talk to me (hiding in the back office). I have NEVER returned to that station, since......and never will.

It is good to know these things and to get it into public eye on fair business tactics.
