Update: Emporians Lose Electricity
Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012
A squirrel caused 2,800 customers to be without electricity Tuesday in the early afternoon. The outage was because of a squirrel, which damaged equipment and caused an equipment failure to the 30th Avenue and Prairie Street electrical substation in Emporia. According to Nick Bundy, media relations representative for Westar Energy, wildlife is a regular cause of equipment failure. Many times, repair crews can restore power by the flip of a breaker, but this time there was damage to the substation equipment The power outage started at 12:43 p.m. and included Westar customers in Northwest Emporia. At 1:35 p.m., 1,249 customers had electricity restored in north to west central Empoira, including the Becker addition, the Lincoln Trailer Park and West Country Club. At total of 407 customers had power restored at 1:44 p.m. in north-central Emporia, including Kansas Highway 99 and north Rural Street. Another 643 customers had power restored in northwest Emporia from Prairie Street to the Flinthills Mall at 1:54 p.m. At 2:08 p.m., the last 379 customers from Northwest Emporia Crestview, Westview and Deerbrook additions had power restored. Lyon County Commission votes on joining Frontier Extension District
Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012
Lyon County Commissioners approved a motion for Lyon County Extension and Research to join with the Frontier Extension District by a vote of 2-1. Rolie Martin and Teresea Walters voted yes. Scott Briggs voted no. The issue was almost decided in a commission meeting two weeks ago, when, after a lengthy public debate, Commissioner Rollie Martin moved to approve the resolution to allow Lyon County Extension to join the district. Commissioner Teresa Walters agreed, but as Commissioner Scott Briggs was set to vote, a sudden executive session was called by County Attorney Marc Goodman. The meeting was reconvened, and the commissioners announced they would table the motion until today. (135 comments)

The People’s Petition
Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012
Emporia has twenty-three Lyon Countians circulating the petition to put the “extension decision” on the ballot. We’ve been out and about¸ engaging in a labor of love. Over the past week or so we’ve met a lot of wonderful folks. Like us, they understand that the right to petition our leaders is precious. Our Founding Fathers weren’t given this right. They had to earn in. When they’d earned that right for themselves, they enshrined it for every future American generation. We intend to do our part to honor them and to honor our fellow citizens. We will meet the goal and the issue will then be decided at the ballot box. (9 comments)
