Albert “Leon” L. Ashcraft, Emporia
1934 - 2008
Albert L. “Leon” Ashcraft of Emporia died Saturday, March 22, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He was 73.
Mr. Ashcraft was a technician for St. Mary’s Hospital and Evco Foods. He served in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War.
The son of Alvie J. and Ruby Walker Ashcraft, he was born Sept. 7, 1934, at Cross County, Ark. He married Verna Kittle on Aug. 27, 1977, at Emporia. She survives.
Mr. Ashcraft was a member and the treasurer of the Salvation Army, a member of the Salvation Army League of Mercy and the Emergency Disaster Services. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7957, American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and the Kansas Old Time Pickers and Fiddlers. He also was a Webelo Scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America.
He is also survived by two daughters, Rose Colunga of Emporia and Betty Yockey of Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Doug Coop of Zumbrota, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Four sisters and five brothers died earlier.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army chapel. Capt. Jeremiah Burris and the Rev. Leonard Wagner will conduct the service. Burial, with services conducted by VFW Post 1980 and American Legion Post 5, will be in Maplewood Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at the Salvation Army chapel.
