Roy Virgil Shirley, Rubedo Beach, Mo.

Former area resident Roy Virgil Shirley died Friday, March 14, 2008, at his home in Rubedo Beach. He was 78.
Mr. Shirley began work with the Gas Service Company in 1953 at Independence, Mo., where he retired as supervisor in 1988. In 1990, he moved from Sugar Creek, Mo., to the Cole Camp, Mo., area. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard of Kansas from 1947 to 1956.
The son of Edward Victor and Frances Dorothy Hoyt Shirley, he was born Sept. 26, 1929, at Barclay, Kan. He married Madeline Buford on Feb. 7, 1953, at Fairmont Christian Church in Independence, Mo. She survives.
Mr. Shirley was a member of the Baptist Church at Reading, Kan.
Mr. Shirley is also survived by two sons, Scott Shirley of Breckenridge, Mo., and Curtis Shirley of Rubedo Beach, Mo.; four sisters, Lola Miller of Topeka, Lois Druyvesteyn of Overland Park, Dorothy Tracy of Colorado and Patricia Shirley of Encino, Calif.; two brothers, Norman Shirley and Vernon Shirley, both of Lincoln, Mo.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A daughter, Debra Leigh Shirley; and four brothers, Eddie Shirley, Ray Shirley, Francis “Bud” Shirley and Don Shirley, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Funeral Home in Cole Camp, Mo. Burial, with military services conducted by American Legion Post 305 of Cole Camp, will be in Brushy Cemetery.
