Mary Elizabeth Smith, 519 Elm St., died Sunday, March 2, 2008, at Newman Regional Health. She was 83.
Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, moved to Emporia in 1926.
The daughter of Louis Clifford and Dora Jane Thomas Powell, she was born June 5, 1924, at Whitewater. She married Albert Smith on May 27, 1943, at Emporia. He died Feb. 17, 1988, at Emporia.
Mrs. Smith was a charter member of the West Side Baptist Church and a member of the West Side Baptist Senior Soldiers. She was a member of the Salvation Army and participated in activities at the Emporia Senior Center.
She is survived by four sons, Joseph McKinley Smith and Daniel Eugene Smith, both of Emporia, Larry Dean Smith of Kansas City, Kan., and Scott Alan Smith of Lincoln, Mo.; seven daughters, Donna Kay Scoggin and Melody Piper, both of Emporia, Ruth Ann Stephens of Newton, Lorene “Sue” Alberta Haslett of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Lucy Lou Roland of Kansas City, Mo., Dixie Lynn Cundiff of Geneseo, Ill., and Holly June Greenspan of Granite City, Ill.; 36 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. A brother, Douglas Powell; and a sister, Dorothy F. Thomas, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the West Side Baptist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Armstrong will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
