Thena Christian of Emporia died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Holiday Resort Care Center.
Services will be announced by the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
The funeral for Thena L. Monroe Christian of Emporia will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. Charity Sandstrom of the church will conduct the service. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Hand-in-Hand Hospice and sent in care of the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
Mrs. Christian died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at the Holiday Resort care center, where she was a resident. She was 88.
She was known as the “Commercial Street Girl,” as she was a longtime employee of several downtown businesses. She worked at Forren’s Restaurant, Leonida’s Restaurant, S&S Cafe and Graves Drug Store before she retired three years ago.
The daughter of James L. and Hallie Batson Huff, she was born June 28, 1919, at Springfield, Mo. She married Waldo Preston Monroe on June 28, 1939. He died May 30, 1963. She married John Christian. They were divorced.
Mrs. Christian was a member of the First Friends Church.
She is survived by three sons, Preston Monroe and Don Monroe, both of Emporia, and Charlie Monroe of Ypsilanti, Mich.; one brother, Lloyd “Bill” Huff of Republic, Mo.; one sister, Vera Dean Hendricks of Shell Knob, Mo.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A brother, George Huff; and a sister, Dorothy Peach, died earlier.
