Ruby Adelia Baker, Dodge City

2008 - 1918

Former Waverly and Burlington resident Ruby Adelia Baker of Dodge City died Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at the Manor on the Plains at Dodge City. She was 89.
Mrs. Baker lived in Burlington when her husband, Glenn Baker, became a full-time minister in 1962 for the Church of Christ in Burlington. She and her husband then moved around Kansas starting congregations and ministering to people. Previously, Mrs. Baker was a bookkeeper for the Sublette Lumber Company in Sublette.
The daughter of Sam and Myrtle Wilson Shilling, she was born April 30, 1918, near Texhoma, Texas. She grew up on a farm in the panhandle of Texas until the Dust Bowl, when she and her family, along with 130 cows and 35 horses, moved to the Waverly area. She worked on the family farm and worked at other jobs, also.
She married Glenn Baker on July 23, 1936, at Burlington. He died Sept. 30, 1996.
Mrs. Baker was a member of the Church of Christ at Dodge City.
She is survived by two daughters, Marilyn Williams of Dodge City and Connie Levering of Salina; one son, Gordon Baker of Oklahoma City, Okla.; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. A son, Gary Lynn Baker; three brothers, Elmer Shilling, William Shilling and Dean Shilling; and a sister, Leila Stewart, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bethany Church of Christ in Waverly. Burial will be in Waverly Cemetery at Waverly. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Jones Funeral Home in Burlington.
