Former Emporian Jose “Joe” A. Casteneda of Lincoln, Neb., died Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at the Bryan LGH Medical Center East in Lincoln, Neb. He was 61.
Mr. Casteneda was a custodian for USD 253 in Emporia from 1977 to 1986 when he retired because of health reasons. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Vietnam where he received his Combat Infantryman Badge.
The son of Jose Arismendi and Marilyn Simons Casteneda, he was born Jan. 8, 1946, at Paola. He graduated from the Flint Hills Technical College with a degree in mechanics.
He married Darlene Brooks on Dec. 22, 1967, at Hallbrook, Ariz. She survives.
Mr. Casteneda was an amateur radio (HAM) operator.
He is survived by four sons, Joe A. Casteneda of Omaha, Neb., Kevin D. Casteneda and Dilino M. Casteneda, both of Lincoln, Neb., and Jermaine A. Casteneda of Milwaukee, Wis.; one daughter, Rose Marie Casteneda of Crete, Neb.; two brothers, Edward McCutcheon of Lawrence and King Randall Jr., of Tucson, Ariz.; five sisters, Donna Dillard and Darlene Holt, both of Topeka, Joyce Potter of Kansas City, Mo., Beda Powers of Barnesville, Ga., and Linda Polk of Ellinwood, Ga.; and 14 grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. The Rev. Chester Morris of the Church of the New Covenant will conduct the service. Burial, with services conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980 and American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5, will be in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
