Warren E. Ghere, Emporia

Warren E. Ghere of Emporia, formerly of Council Grove and Butler, Mo., died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, at the Holiday Resort care center. He was 84.
Mr. Ghere was a watchmaker by trade. In 1951, he and his wife, Jeane, moved to Council Grove where they owned and operated Ghere’s Jewelry and Gifts for 38 years. They also owned two Home Entertainment Centers, one in Emporia and one in Manhattan. They retired in 1989 and traveled for several years before they returned to their hometown of Butler, Mo. He returned to Emporia in 2006. During his retirement, Mr. Ghere was well-known for rebuilding and repairing grandfather and antique clocks. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II in which he was a paratrooper with the 17th and 82nd Airborne divisions.
The son of Vernie and Alice Ghere, he was born Oct. 17, 1923, at Butler, Mo. He married Norma Jeane Spain on March 3, 1948. She died Oct. 27, 2001.
Mr. Ghere was a member of the United Methodist Church while in Council Grove and the First Christian Church in Butler.
He is survived by two daughters, Debra Ghere and Kelly Ghere, both of Emporia; and a brother, Donald Ghere of Butler, Mo. A sister, Cleta York, died earlier.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Underwood-Brandtonies Funeral Home in Butler, Mo. The family will meet friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Butler, Mo.
The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Holiday Resort Rehabilitation Center for new equipment and sent in care of the funeral home, 10 S. High St., Butler, MO 64730.
