Jeffry Lee Mason, Cary, N.C.
1963 - 2008
Former Emporia resident Jeffry Lee Mason died unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at WakeMed Hospital in Cary, N.C., after surgery. He was 44.
Mr. Mason, a registered nurse, was first an ICU nurse at WakeMed Cary Hospital, then was nurse manager of the Observation Unit, ICU and Vascular Access Nursing. He currently was working as a part of the Emergency Unit. He also was responsible for setting up the ICU units in the building process and helped oversee the pharmacy in the changes in technology. He taught classes to nurses in different levels of certification and was a “Triple Crown” instructor in ACLS, PALS and BLS. He worked at Newman Memorial Hospital in Emporia, Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa, Okla., and Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, Calif., before he moved to WakeMed at Cary, N.C.
The son of Don L. and Betty Rose Mason, he was born Sept. 1, 1963, at Kingman. He graduated valedictorian of his class at Kingman High School; attended Emporia State University; graduated from the Newman Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse; and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from National University in San Diego, Calif.
Mr. Mason was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of the North Carolina Organization of Nurse Leaders and served on the board.
He is survived by his parents of Kingman; and his grandmother, Rose Shellenberger of Emporia and grandparents Don and Lorraine Mason of Council Grove. His grandfather, Virgil Shellenberger, died earlier.
Two memorial celebration services were held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary, N.C.
