Dale E. Rhone, Topeka
1916 - 2008
Former Emporia resident Dale E. Rhone of Topeka died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at the Rossville Nursing Home. He was 92.
Mr. Rhone was a signal man for the Santa Fe Railroad before he retired after 30 years of service. He lived in Emporia for 14 years. He served in Europe with the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the 90th Division Artillery and received the Silver Star.
The son of Lee and Maude Grover Rhone, he was born Jan. 15, 1916, at Hurdsfield, N.D. He married Judith Lorraine Luthro on Jan. 25, 1944. She died Sept. 16, 1992.
Mr. Rhone was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by two daughters, Pat Michna of Shoreview, Minn., and Sandra Akerstrom of Hoyt; three sons, Greg Rhone, Doug Rhone and Don Rhone, all of Topeka; two brothers, Darrel Rhone of Arizona and Beryl Rhone of North Dakota; one sister, Melba Livingston of North Dakota; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A son, Timothy Dale Rhone, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka. The graveside service, with military honors by VFW Post 1980 and American Legion Post 5, will be at 1:30 p.m. in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
