Arthur R. “Art” Mahar of Waverly died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the Sunset Manor in Waverly. He was 82.
Mr. Mahar owned and operated Mahar Construction at Waverly for many years, operating heavy equipment doing conservation projects and other jobs. He retired in 2007.
Earlier, he had worked on the family farm and in the Eureka area until 1964 when he and his family moved to Waverly. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was part of the German Occupation Army.
The son of Leonard and Jeanetta “Nettie” Mitchell Mahar, he was born Nov. 16, 1925, in rural Greenwood County. He grew up on the family farm and attended Ivanpah Rural School and Eureka High School.
He married Audra Faye McCullough on June 29, 1947, at Eureka. She died June 3, 2005.
Mr. Mahar was a member of American Legion Hull-Cromwell Post 119 at Waverly and had been a member of the American Legion for 61 years. He was a member of the Land Contractors Association, the Burlington Masonic Lodge 66, A.F. and A.M., the Arab Shrine Temple in Topeka and Kansas York Rite 55 in Eureka. He had helped place flags on the graves of veterans on Memorial Day every year since his discharge from the Army.
He is survived by three daughters, Jackie Clarkson of Waverly, Patty Anderson of New Strawn and Peggy Burkdoll of Melvern; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A brother, David Mahar; two sisters, Eunice Bogle and Mary Jane Moore; and a grandson, Mitchell Anderson, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial, with military honors, will be in Waverly Cemetery at Waverly. The family will meet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
