Iola Jane "Ole" Smith, Golden Colorado

1928 - 2008

Former Emporia resident Iola Jane “Ole” Smith of Golden, Colo., died Friday of an intracranial hemorrhage. She was 79.
Mrs. Smith worked for 17 years at the Golden High School, then was secretary to the principal. Earlier, she worked in the registrar’s office at the University of Minnesota and later was secretary for the First Methodist/Wesley Foundation. The family lived in Emporia from 1950 to 1963; Laramie, Wyo., from 1963 to 1969; and Golden, Colo., from 1969 to the present.
The daughter of Manferd and Fern Seath, she was born July 8, 1928, on the family farm near Freeborn, Minn. She graduated in 1946 from school at Albert Lea, Minn.
She married Henry Dixon Smith on June 20, 1948, at Albert Lea, Minn. He survives.
Mrs. Smith was a 46-year member of P.E.O.; a former co-chairman of the Danforth Foundation Associates program; a former Girl Scout leader; and served as leader in her church and various book and study groups.
She is also survived by one daughter, Chris Butler of Lakewood, Colo.; three sons, Scott Smith of Lakewood, Colo.; Bruce Smith of Grand Junction, Colo., and William Smith of Golden, Colo.; one sister, Shirley Miller of Aurora, Colo.; and six grandchildren. A brother, Wayne Seath, died earlier.
The memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Methodist Church in Golden, Colo.
Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Committee on Relief, the Nature Conservancy or a charity of the donor’s choice.
