Jackson George, San Antonio, Texas

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS
Jackson George, age 87, a longtime resident of Coffey County and recently of San Antonio, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, in San Antonio.
He was born on October 8, 1919. He and his wife were longtime Hereford breeders.
A 1941 graduate in agronomy of Kansas State University in Manhattan, he served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a lieutenant in the 1st Cavalry Signal Corps and went to the Philippines with Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He taught veterans’ classes and began farming after the war.
Mr. George served as secretary and manager of the Kansas Hereford Association until 1961. He was with the Farm Home Administration from 1961 to 1985 and served as state director in Kansas, being instrumental in the organization of rural water districts over the entire state.
Mr. George was a charter member of the Blue Ribbon 4-H Club and a member of the Lebo United Methodist Church, Key West Grange, Lebo City Council, Coffey County Fair Board, Kansas Livestock Association, Kansas Rural Appraisers and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
He served as Coffee County Democratic chairman, was a member of Kansas Silver Haired Legislature, and a 60 year member of the American Legion.
He is survived by his daughter, Cindy Simmons of San Antonio; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and two brothers, Phil George of Lebo and Doug George of Loveland, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie, on Feb. 16, 2007. A daughter, Patricia George Koons, and a sister, Eleanor George, also died earlier.
A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Nov. 21 at the Lebo United Methodist Church.
