Owen Robert Storey

Hartford native Owen Robert Storey died Sept. 9, 2007, at the Flint Hills Care Center. He was 86.
Mr. Storey drove trucks throughout the United States and helped build roads in the mountains before he retired and moved to Southern California and Arizona. Earlier, he worked in the timber industry in Oregon.
The son of William Henry and Millie French Storey, he was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Hartford. He attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Olpe before he moved to the West Coast when he was 15.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1944. He provided medical aid while in the Philippines and his unit assisted the Red Cross in erecting buildings and taking care of the injured after the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan.
He was transferred to a motor transportation division and was promoted to master sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
After his discharge in 1946, he homesteaded at Tule Lake, Calif., and later moved to Klamath Falls, Ore. He returned to Kansas in 1998.
He married Neva Stevenson in 1943 in Klamath Falls, Ore. They were divorced. He married Donna Hayes in 1953 at Klamath Falls. She died in 1996 at Kingman, Ariz.
Mr. Storey was a member of American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Lowry-Funston Post 1980.
He is survived by a daughter, Roberta Castor of Tucson, Ariz.; a stepson, James Hayes of Palmer, Ark.; six sisters, Beulah M. Stine, Margie M. Boan and Ellen F. Kuertzel, all of Emporia, Rosalie P. Brenton of Eureka, LaVerne A. Miller of Chanute and Edith L. Musch of Wichita; one grandchild; four stepgrandchildren and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.
One stepdaughter, Tommy Jean Birkett, one sister, Louise Christy, and one brother, William D. Storey, died earlier.
The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fairview Cemetery, southeast of Olpe. Clayton Garrow of Emporia will conduct the service. The family will meet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.
