Eugene Mac Otis

Eugene Mac Otis, 1711 Lincoln St., died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007, at the Holiday Resort Care Center in Emporia. He was 76.
Mr. Otis was a guidance counselor at Emporia High School for 36 years until he retired in 1992. Beginning with the 1958-59 school year until 1966-67, he was the Spartans’ basketball coach. During the 1962 season, his team won the Class B state basketball championship.
Mr. Otis taught industrial arts and drivers education at Melvern High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
The son of Mac and Ida Mae Bross Otis, he was born April 3, 1931, in Wilsey. He married Donna Louise Munsell on Aug. 26, 1951. She survives.
Mr. Otis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He also was a member of the Emporia Antique Car Club, Veterans of Foreign Warrs Lowry-Funston Post 1980, American Legion Ball-McColm Post 5 and the Lions Club at Melvern.
He also is survived by one daughter, Debbie Shahan of Elmdale; one son, David Alan Otis of Augusta; two brothers, Marvin Otis of Liberty, Mo., and Loren Otis of White City; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. The Revs. Nancy Gammill and Claudia Bakely of the church will conduct the service. Burial, with services conducted by VFW Post 1980 and American Legion Post 5, will be in Wilsey Cemetery in Wilsey. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home.

Mabel Marie Dowell died Monday, Sept. 10, 2007, at the Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Waverly. She was 83.
Mrs. Dowell worked at a sewing factory and for the Humphreys family from 1969 to 1991.
The daughter of Homer and Olive Herman Smith, she was born Oct. 30, 1923, at Quenemo. She married Lloyd Dowell on Oct. 30, 1942, at Ottawa. He survives.
Mrs. Dowell was a member of the Lebo Baptist Church and a Bible study group. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.
She also is survived by two daughters, Tonya McClaflin of Westphalia and Janice Giguere of Valley View, Texas; one son, Floyd Dowell of Rose Hill; one brother, LeRoy Smith of New Britain, Penn.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Lebo Baptist Church. Burial will be in Arvonia Cemetery, north of Lebo. The family will meet friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jones VanArdale Funeral Home in Lebo.
