Wilbur (Bud) Byron Smulling, Nebraska City, Nebraska

NEBRASKA CITY, NEB.
Lyon County native Wilbur Byron “Bud” Smulling died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at his home in Nebraska City, Neb. He was 77.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Nebraska City. The graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Ivy Cemetery near Admire. The family will meet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Peterson Mortuary Chapel in Nebraska City.
Mr. Smulling and his wife owned and operated the Whispering Pines Bed and Breakfast in a 100-year-old home in Nebraska City from 1984 until August 2005. He previously worked for J.C. Penney Company and I.D.S. in Chanute until 1967, when the family moved to Mission, where he worked for the Mode O’Day Company.
He was promoted to district supervisor and moved to Princeton, Ill. Then, he was promoted to regional supervisor and moved to La Vista, Neb., where the family lived until 1984. In Nebraska City, he also was a bailiff for Otoe County District Court.
The son of Wilbur Byron Sr. and Anna Mabel Long Smulling, he was born March 16, 1930, in Lyon County on the family farm. He graduated from Miller High School in 1948, after which he joined the U.S. Air Force, and was discharged with the rank of staff sergeant.
He married Shirley Mae Anderson on Sept. 2, 1950, at Yuma, Ariz. She survives.
Mr. Smulling belonged to the United Methodist Men, and many civic organizations, including the Kiwanis and Elks. He was a member of the Nebraska City Barbershop Chorus and was a scout leader and committeeman for the Boy Scouts of America.
He served on the City Dock Board and was a member of the Nebraska City Tourism and Commerce board of directors, the Otoe County Visitors Center and Nebraska City Chamber of Commerce.
He also is survived by one daughter, Susan Kim Nettleton of Reading; one son, Timothy Ward Smulling of Nebraska City; four sisters, Doris Gerstner of Emporia, Darlene Sutherlund of Paola, Dorothy Sullivan of Wichita and Donna Kay Tucker of Bonner Springs; one brother, Keith Smulling of Osage City; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Twin sons, Steven and Stuart Smulling, died shortly after birth. A grandchild, Melissa Sue Smulling, also died earlier.
