Edith Ruth Jacobs Price, Reading

1925 - 2007

Edith Ruth Price, a longtime resident of Reading, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2007, at Newman Regional Health. She was 82.
Mrs. Price was a rancher for most of her life with her husband, Ben Price Jr. They went to Brazil several times to help establish a cattle ranch with other cattlemen. Earlier, she taught in Minnesota and Topeka. She also had sold insurance.
The daughter of Arthur Wray and Beulah Nell White Jacob, she was born July 21, 1925, in Valley Center. She graduated from Valley Center High School in 1943 and Kansas State University with a degree in physical education and animal husbandry. At KSU, she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.
She married Benjamin Ferguson Price Jr., on June 12, 1949, in Wichita. He survives.
Mrs. Price was a member of the Reading United Methodist Church. She served on the USD 251 school board for eight years. She was a founding member and former president of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association, and a founding member and the first woman to serve on the board of directors for the North American Limousin Association.
She helped establish the Lyon County Zoning Board and served as the first zoning officer. She also was a member of the Rural Fire District Board in Reading and the Kansas Cowbelles.
She also is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Ann Wilson of Reading; two sons, Bruce Arthur Price of Reading and Brian Ferguson Price of Garden City; three sisters, Mary Jane Brown of Arkansas City, Nellora Walker of San Diego, Calif., and Rachel Wedman of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A sister, Betty Dyer, died earlier.
The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Reading United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be at Reading Cemetery. Mrs. Price was cremated. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church.
The family suggests that, instead of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the church or Hand in Hand Hospice, and sent in care of the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home, P.O. Box 43, Lebo, KS 66856.
