Jason David Herter, Pittsburg

Former Emporia resident Jason David Herter of Pittsburg died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at Sarasota, Fla. He was 29.
Mr. Herter was an installation technician for Gyrocam Systems/SAS Defense. He helped install surveillance cameras for the military overseas. He served his country in the National guard, 772 Combat Engineering Division. While in service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon and Armed Forces Reserve Medal with M Device, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Combat Action Badge from Iraq and many other military honors through the National Guard.
The son of David W. Horton and Genevieve Smith, he was born Nov. 28, 1977, at Morgantown, W. Va. He attended schools in Emporia. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
He married Stephanie Segura on Sept. 18, 2004, at Eureka Springs, Ark. They were divorced. Mr. Herter was a member of American Legion Benjamin Fuller Post 64 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Albert Fuller Post, both in Pittsburg.
He is survived by one son, Devan Herter of Pittsburg; one daughter, Alexis Herter of Pittsburg; his mother, Genevieve Smith of Emporia; his father and stepmother, David and Linda Horton of Conroe, Texas; two sisters, Tina Connor of Emporia and Claire Hanaee of Iran; two brothers, Alan Silver of Emporia and David Silver of Glencoe, Okla.; and his longtime friend, Tiffany Timmons of Emporia.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Burial, with military honors conducted by the National Guard of Pittsburg and the Missouri Military Funeral Honors Detail Team from Springfield, Mo., will be in Highland Park Cemetery at Pittsburg.
