Herman Benjamin Grundy of Eureka died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007, at Medicalodge in Eureka. He was 96.
Mr. Grundy, a longtime teacher, retired in 1972 as chairman of the English department at Northwest Junior High School in Kansas City, Kan., where he also taught English. He began his teaching career in 1929 at Hillside School, where he taught one year, and then taught in a country school at Lamont. He was teacher and principal of the Piedmont grade school for five years and a high school teacher in Atwood for one year before he and his wife moved to Kansas City, Kan., where he taught at Northwest for a year and then volunteered for service in the U.S. Army.
He was trained as a radar technician at several sites in Florida before he was sent to the Asiatic Theatre. At the end of World War II, he returned to his teaching job in Kansas City. Mr. Grundy was named a Master Teacher in 1971. Upon retirement, he and his wife moved to the Eureka area.
The son of Lowell and Alma Nitsche Grundy, he was born Jan. 9, 1911, in a stone farmhouse near Climax where he grew up and attended local schools. He graduated from high school in 1929 with a normal training certificate, which qualified him to teach grade school. He continued his education while teaching and received a bachelor’s degree.
He married Olive M. Masters on Oct. 3, 1931, at Council Grove. She died earlier.
Mr. Grundy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Eureka.
He is survived by one brother, Eugene Grundy of Albuquerque, N.M.; and two sisters, Phyllis Broddle of Wichita and Betty Meadows of Iola. Five brothers died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Koup Family Funeral Home in Eureka. The Rev. Diana Hill of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
