The Mass of Christian Burial for Stephen James Hageman, director of Alcohol and Drug Services at the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Darren Henson will be the celebrant. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. The prayer service will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where the family will greet friends until 6 p.m.
Mr. Hageman died of cancer on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at his home in Emporia. He was 57.

He dedicated his life to the rehabilitation of those who suffered from alcohol and drug addiction. He became a counselor at Corner House in 1977 and in 1985 became the executive director. In 1986, he became the director of Alcohol and Drug Services at the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas. To honor his dedication and the difference he made in alcohol and drug services, the Community Outreach Building was renamed the Hageman Building in 2007.
He was a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor III and was involved in the professional organizations of the Kansas Association of Addiction Professionals and Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Project. He served on the Governor’s Council on Alcoholism and frequently worked with the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services, serving on various state committees dealing with alcohol and drug treatment and prevention policies. He also served on the Lyon County Health Care Alliance Steering Committee, the Community Review Board and was one of the creators of the 5th Judicial District Drug Court.
The son of James and Margaret Bergmann Hageman, he was born Aug. 25, 1950, at Beloit. He attended Catholic schools in Junction City and Beloit, then attended Cloud County Community College in Concordia and graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in wildlife biology and wildlife conservation.
He married Rhonda Hudson on Sept. 5, 1981, and they moved to Emporia.
Mr. Hageman is survived by his wife; his mother, of Savannah, Mo.; and two brothers, Daniel Hageman of Lenexa and Keneth Hageman of Lee’s Summit, Mo.
