Wilbur N. Monett, Monett, MO.

1919 - 2007

Former Emporia resident Wilbur N. Stegman of Monett, also formerly of Springfield, Mo., died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2007, at the Lacobi Nursing Home in Monett. He was 88.
Mr. Stegman, a retired educator, was acting Dean of Men at Southwest Missouri State in Springfield for the 1966-67 academic year and later, assistant Dean of Students. He also was coordinator of research at SMS. Before joining the SMS staff, he taught music at Lebo, Washington and Salina schools. He was a junior high school counselor at Derby. From May 1964 through June 1965, he was executive secretary of the Governor’s Mental Health Planning Commission in Wyoming. During World War II, he was a Lieutenant (j.g.) and a Submariner in the U.S. Navy.
The son of Guy Franklin and Opal Mae Riddle Stegman, he was born June 14, 1919, at Kings City, Mo. At an early age, he and his family moved to Lincoln, Kan., where he graduated from high school. He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and a doctor of education degree from Oklahoma State University in 1967.
He married Winifred Lorraine Saffer on Nov. 6, 1942, at Emporia. She survives.
Mr. Stegman was a Sunday school teacher for many years at University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield and a member of the Showme Statesmen Chorus. He was a member of the American Personnel and Guidance Association, National Education Association, Phi Mu Alpha, Phi Delta Kappa and the International Platform Association.
He is also survived by one son, B.J. Stegman of Monett, Mo.; and one grandson.
The funeral was held Nov. 27, 2007, at the First Presbyterian Church in Monett, Mo. Burial was in White Chapel Memorial Gardens at Springfield, Mo.
