Richard Eugene Sowers, Dodge City

1930 - 2007

Former area resident Richard Eugene Sowers died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at his home in Dodge City. He was 77.
Mr. Sowers was a teacher at U.S.D. 443 in Dodge City for 30 years and then at Dodge City Community College for six years. He also owned and operated the Radio Shack business in Dodge City for many years. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and in the National Guard.
The son of Ernest Everett and Bessie Elizabeth Pierce Sowers, he was born Sept. 13, 1930, at Bushong. He graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia.
He married Patricia “Pat” Ann Pedersen on July 28, 1956, at Emporia. They moved to Americus and then to Dodge City in 1962. She died Oct. 5, 1997.
Mr. Sowers was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Dodge City.
He is survived by two sons, Rick Sowers and Rob Sowers, both of Dodge City; a daughter, Nancy Brown of Norfolk, Neb.; two brothers, Leonard Sowers of Tucson, Ariz., and Dean Forbeck of Staffordville; a sister, Connie Luginsland of Waverly; and six grandchildren. Two brothers, Enoch Sowers and Vernon Sowers; and a sister, Ernestine Hunt, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery at Dodge City. Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions to Habitat for Humanity of Dodge City may be sent in care of the funeral home, 1901 6th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801-2652.
