Robert Joe Boles, Emporia

1915 - 2007

Robert Joe Boles died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2007, at his home, 2007 Briarcliff Lane. He was 92.
Mr. Boles was a biology professor at Emporia State University for 20 years and biology teacher at Manhattan High School for 20 years. He retired in December 1980. He received the Emporia State University Service Citation in 1990.
The son of Walter Edwin and Ivy Nations Boles, he was born Nov. 7, 1915, at Brandsville, Mo. He married Louise Darby on June 12, 1949, at Manhattan. She survives.
Mr. Boles was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society at Emporia State University; a member of the Order of the Mound at Southwestern College, the American Fisheries Society, the Southwest Association of Naturalists, Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society, the Emporia Retired Teachers Association and Emeritus Faculty at ESU. He started the Biology Club at ESU; was a sponsor of the Hawaiian Club at ESU and the College of Emporia; and was former editor of the Kansas School Naturalist.
He is survived by one daughter, Christine Martin of Lenexa; one son, Walter Earl Boles of Sidney, Australia; two brothers, Paul Boles of Manhattan and Daniel Boles of West Covina, Calif.; one sister, June Goff of St. Louis, Mo.; and two grandchildren. A son, Richard Joe Boles; two brothers, Walter Elliot Boles and Ronald Boles; and a sister, Rosemary Harvey, died earlier.
The memorial service will be at a later date. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery at Manhattan, also at a later date. Mr. Boles was cremated.
