Frederick E. Williamson, Fremont, Neb.

1927 - 2007

Former Emporia resident Frederick “Fred” E. Williamson of Fremont, Neb., died Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, at Fremont Area Medical Center. He was 80.
Mr. Williamson was a teacher and administrator in elementary and high schools in several communities in Kansas, South Dakota and Nebraska before he moved to Fremont, Neb., in 1972. He was manager of Philips Department Store until it closed, then worked at Sampter’s Clothing, both in Fremont.
The son of Elmer J. and Myrtle Williamson, he was born Feb. 28, 1927, at Kansas City, Mo. He grew up in Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Bremer in the Pacific. He was in the Naval Reserve and recalled to active duty during the Korean War. After his discharge on June 4, 1952, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and a master’s degree from Kansas State University in 1956.
He married Ruth Anne Shumway on Sept. 2, 1950, at Turon. She survives.
Mr. Williamson was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont.
He is also survived by two sons, Mikel Williamson of Midland, S.D., and Steven Williamson of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Kristi Williamson of Littleton, Colo., and Susan Brusnahan of Omaha, Neb.; and 10 grandchildren.
The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Fremont. Burial, with military honors conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20, was in Calvary Cemetery at Fremont.
