Vera D. Hoyum, Cloquet, Minn.

Former Emporia resident Vera D. Hoyum of Cloquet, Minn., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2007, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet, Minn.
Mrs. Hoyum taught at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia and the teachers college in Dodge City. She wrote the standardized English tests for the State of Kansas and continued to do so until she was in her 70s. She was director of Elementary Education in Chisholm, Minn., and taught at the Laura MacArthur School in Duluth, Minn. After she retired, she was a volunteer teacher for gifted students.
The daughter of Silas and Theodocia Davis, she was born in 1911 in Norwood, Mo. She married Oliver Hoyum, who died in 1977.
Mrs. Hoyum was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. She helped found the Carlton County Chapter of of Habitat for Humanity and organized many letter writing campaigns for Amnesty International.
She is survived by three children, George Hoyum of Rockford, Minn., Claire Hoyum of St. Paul, Minn., and Chuck Hoyum of Edina, Minn.; and one grandson. Two brothers and two sisters died earlier.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Cloquet. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Cloquet.
