Harold Wayne “Zig" Ziegler, Burlington

Longtime Burlington businessman Harold Wayne “Zig” Ziegler died Wednesday, May 23, 2007, at the Coffey County Hospital. He was 77.
Mr. Ziegler operated the Z & L Grocery in Burlington for 26 years, which was formerly the M & L Grocery where he began working after graduation from Burlington High School in 1947. He bought a partnership in the business in 1963. He began his working career by shining shoes at the age of 10 in his father’s barber shop.
He served 18 years in the Kansas National Guard.
The son of Bert Samuel and Elsie (Rhea) Ziegler, he was born Dec. 8, 1929, at what would be his lifelong home in Burlington.
Mr. Ziegler was a member of the First Christian Church in Burlington. He was a civic leader for many years, serving as a member of the city council and a member of the board of directors of the Burlington Cemetery Association and Peoples National Bank. He was a 55-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He joined the lodge in 1952 and became Master in 1963. He was a 51-year member of the Arab Temple Shrine of Topeka. In 1984, he helped organize the Rawhiders as a unit of the Shrine and members rode the three-wheeled vehicles in many parades. For the past 20 years, he has presented a scholarship in his name to a senior at Burlington High School.
Survivors include many cousins.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
