Edward Raymond Spielbusch

Edward Raymond Spielbusch, who fought at Iwo Jima, died Friday, May 18, 2007 at the Holiday Resort. Mr. Spielbusch, who formerly lived at 725 Garfield St., was 85.
The funeral Mass is planned for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. Darren Henson will celebrate the service. The rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church Burial, with military honors by Ball-McColm Post 5 of the American Legion and Lowry-Funston Post 1980 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
The son of Raymond Edward and Gertrude Seuferling Spielbusch, he was born Jan. 6, 1922, in Louisburg. He married Mary Jane Kowalski on June 1, 1950, at Sacred Heart Church, Emporia. She died Feb. 9, 2003, in Emporia.
Mr. Spielbusch, who enlisted in the Marines on Jan. 31, 1942, served in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Iwo Jima and on Guam. In February 1945, he was a sergeant in charge of two machine-gun squads at Iwo Jima. He received the Purple Heart after being wounded at Iwo Jima. He was released from the Marines in 1946.
He worked for more than 30 years at Panhandle Eastern, Olpe, and retired 26 years ago.
Mr. Spielbusch was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Ball-McColm Post 5, Lowry Post 1980, the Disabled American Veterans and the Emporia Antique Car Club.
He is survived by three sisters, Margaret Roberts and Edna Foster, both of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Mary Ann Peuser of Spring Hill.
A brother, Arthur Spielbusch, died earlier.

Edward Raymond Spielbusch was formerly of 726 Garfield St. The incorrect address was given in the obituary published Monday.
