Estelle Gertrude Arnold
The funeral for Estelle Gertrude Arnold will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, conducted by the Rev. Chad Poland. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Memorial donations to the church may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
Mrs. Arnold died Sunday, May 13, 2007, at Newman Regional Health. She was 104.
The daughter of Pearley F. and Clara E. Shawyer Hancock, she was born March 16, 1903, in Burlington. She attended Burlington and Topeka schools, graduating from Topeka High School and Washburn University.
She was secretary to the Kansas Secretary of State for six years before moving to Emporia. She married O.D. Arnold on Sept. 15, 1942. He died July 12, 1969.
Mrs. Arnold was a certified public accountant, secretary, treasurer and bookkeeper for T. Jensen & Sons for 25 years and secretary for the Emporia Country Club for 14 years. She retired in 1980.
She was active in charitable and volunteer service organizations and was a member of the First Congregational Church and the Plymouth Daughters Circle. She was also a member of the Fortune Study Club, the AARP and the auxiliary of Ball-McColm American Legion Post 5. She was a member of the Newman Hospital Auxiliary and served as its treasurer for nine years.
Mrs. Arnold was known for her ability as a bridge player.
She is survived by one son, Jerry Arnold of Emporia, and nine nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Carl F. Hancock, and six sisters, Ethel Schneider, Elizabeth Thorne, Letha Vincent, Lorena Anderson, Ruby Zweibohmer and Geraldine Hancock.
