Nan B. Ballard of Emporia, a former longtime resident of Blackwell, Okla., died Tuesday, March 27, 2007, at the Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. She was 86.
Mrs. Ballard was a nurse’s aide at the Hillcrest Manor Nursing Home in Blackwell. When she was young, she helped her family with farming and spent many hours picking cotton. She and her husband moved to Emporia in July 2002.
The daughter of John Payton and Clara Bell Cook Whitley, she was born Oct. 12, 1920. She moved with her family to Oklahoma, where she grew up and attended Lacrosse school near Verden, Okla.
She married Ivan Ballard on Oct. 4, 1945, at Wellington and they moved to Blackwell, Okla. He survives.
Mrs. Ballard was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell and served on many church committees.
She is also survived by one daughter, Barbara Wente of Emporia; one son, Phil Ballard of Broken Arrow, Okla.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Four brothers, William, Allan, Raymond and James Whitley; and four sisters, Ella Black, Susie McDaniel, Edith McBride and Evalyn Kinsey, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Blackwell, Okla. Burial will be in Blackwell, Okla. The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Roberts and Son Funeral Home in Blackwell.
