Bertha E. Hatch, Burlington

Bertha E. Hatch, a longtime resident of the Burlington area died Friday, March 23, 2007, at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor, where she was a resident since 2004. Earlier, she lived at the Life Care Center in Burlington. She was 97.
The daughter of Henry W. and Katie M. Haehn Hatch, she was born July 31, 1909, on the Jayhawker Farm northwest of Gridley. She attended Sunnyside District 94 Rural School. On the farm, she helped with the livestock and worked in the fields.
Miss Hatch was a member of the Burlington United Methodist Church and Sunday school and baked many pies for church occasions. She also was a member of the Sunnyside Grange and later, the Otter Creek Grange. In 2003, she was honored as a 75-year member of the Grange. She was one of the first members of the Liberty extension home unit and when the unit was moved to Gridley, she helped start the Nimble Fingers Club and was the first president. She worked with the Liberty 4-H Club, served as sewing leader and made the cheerleader uniforms for the Gridley High School.
She is survived by a sister, Jean Hatch Shull of St. Louis, Mo.
Two brothers, Homer Hatch and Ira Hatch, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Jones Funeral Home in Burlington. Burial will be at Bailey Cemetery, northwest of Burlington. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
