Carl Owen Maguire
The memorial service for Carl Owen Maguire will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Victory Fellowship Four Square Church in Emporia. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the church.
Memorial contributions to the Carl Maguire Memoiral Fund may be sent in care of the Jones VanArsdale Funeral Home, P.O. Box 43, Lebo, KS 66856.
Mr. Maguire died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at his home in Emporia. He was 54.
He began his hotel career at the Copa Villa and Travelodge motels in Emporia from 1974 to 1977. He worked at Montgomery Ward in the Flinthills Mall from 1977 to 1986, then returned to the hotel business as director of sales and general manager of the Holiday Inn Holidome until 1996. In 1996 he moved to Fayetteville, Ark., to open the Windsor Suites Hotel and later the Hilton Garden Inn in Bentonville. He returned to Emporia in 2000 to be with his family and opened the Candlewood Suites Hotel, before he resigned with health problems in September 2005.
The son of Carl and Rosemarie Christian Maguire, he was born July 29, 1952, at Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Emporia in 1970 and attended Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. He performed with many local musical groups in college.
He married Monika Burris in 1976 and they had a son, Ryan, in 1979. He married Lily Nichols in March 1989. She survives.
Mr. Maguire was a member of Victory Fellowship Church.
He is also survived by seven daughters, Tina Nichols, Janie Nichols, Carol Nichols, Shirley Oliver, Shari Good and Aja Johnson, all of Emporia and Naomi Kennedy of Lenexa; two sons, Ryan Maguire and Joshua Maguire of Emporia; two brothers, Mike Maguire of Lincoln, Neb., and Coley Maguire of Washington; nine grandsons; nine granddaughters; and one great-grandson.
