Mary Josephine Cauthorn
Former Elmdale resident Mary Josephine Cauthorn died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Arlington Memorial Hospital in Arlington, Texas. She was 88.
Miss Cauthorn taught third and fourth grades at Elmdale Grade School from 1946 to 1947, kindergarten and first grades at Strong City Grade School from 1964 to 1966 and fourth grade at Cotttonwood Falls Grade School in Chase County Unified District 284 for 20 years before she retired in 1986. Earlier, she taught in the Mexico, Booneville and St. Louis, Mo., school systems.
The daughter of Joseph Barks and Mabel Margaret Vaughn Wilson, she was born Nov. 14, 1918, at Mexico, Mo. She graduated from Paris High School in Paris, Mo., and from Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Mo., with a degree in education.
She married James Peyton Cauthorn were married on June 17, 1945, at Mexico, Mo. He died June 1, 1993.
Mrs. Cauthorn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and church groups. She also was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and bridge clubs.
She is survived by three daughters, Jane Cauthorn of Marion, Betsy Cooke of Cornville, Ariz., and Polly Gill of Arlington, Texas ; a sister, Margaret Hahn of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Charles Wilson of Mexico, Mo.; and three grandsons.
The service to celebrate her life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 17 at the First Presbyterian Church in Cottonwood Falls. The Rev. Pat Ireland will conduct the service. Mrs. Cauthorn was cremated. The inurnment service will be at a later date.
