Elwin D. Shurts, Arkansas City

Former Emporian Elwin D. Shurts, 80, of Arkansas City died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007, at his home.
Mr. Shurts was a construction pipe-fitter and welder throughout the United States before he retired. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served on the USS Yorktown.
The son of Ivan G. and Isla Bliss Owen Shurts, he was born May 12, 1926, in Bureau County, Ill. He attended trade school at Tulsa, Okla.
He married Betty L. Beyer Hughes on April 16, 1959, at Miami, Okla. She survives.
Mr. Shurts was a member of Shelton Beaty American Legion Post 18 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Spencer Ralston Post 1254.
He is also survived by one son, Will Shurts of Ponca City, Okla.; three brothers, Duane Shurts and Ronald Shurts, both of Henry, Ill., and Jim Shurts of Peoria, Ill.; two sisters, Rebecca Taylor of Oswego, Ill., and Sherrill McKeever of Peoria, Ill.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
A private family service will be held later.
