William J. Miles, Reading

William J. Miles of Reading died Thursday, June 7, 2007, at Stormon-Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was 97.
Mr. Miles was a farmer and rancher in the Reading area for most of his life. He later painted houses until his death. He lived at his farm for 76 years.
The son of George and Emma Moore Miles, he was born July 20, 1909, at Lebo. He married Marie Kester on Nov. 25, 1967, at the First Congregational Church in Emporia. She survives.
Mr. Miles was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City. He was a member of the American Legion and Eagles Club, both in Emporia. He was a 50-year member of the Reading Lions Club and was awarded a certificate of appreciation from the International Presidents of Lions for Leadership and Service in 2004-2005.
He is also survived by two daughters, Pat Rucas of Alamo, Texas, and Diane Hull of Norton; one sister, Dorothy Kline of Casper, Wyo.; five grandchilden; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Two sisters and two brothers died earlier.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Osage City. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, south of Emporia. The family will meet friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the church; the rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday at the church.
