Donald Ross Horton, Council Grove
Donald Ross Horton of Council Grove died Sunday, July 8, 2007, at Indianapolis, Ind. He was 83.
Mr. Horton retired from Dolly Madison in Emporia in 1987 after 24 years of service. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and was discharged in 1948 as a gunner’s mate 1st class.
The son of Lue Omar and Bonnie Roberts Horton, he was born Feb. 17, 1924. He graduated from Wilsey High School in 1942.
He married Alberta Mae Johnson on Sept. 23, 1949, at the Johnson home in Dunlap. She survives.
Mr. Horton was a member of the First Congregational Church in Council Grove. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of American Legion Frederick Phillips Post 121 and the Patrol Craft Sailors Association.
He is also survived by three daughters, Roxanne Wooden of Council Grove, Cheryl Connell of Marion and ReNita Rothe of Plainfield, Ill.; one son, Brad Horton of Council Grove; two sisters, Wilma Bennett of Council Grove and Peggy Colby of Alamo, Texas; two brothers, Guy Horton of Emporia and Leo Horton of Warwick, R. I. ; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Leland Horton and Dean Horton, died earlier.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church in Council Grove. Burial, with military honors, will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Council Grove. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Council Grove Chapel.
