Former Council Grove and Emporia resident Leonard Grant Rumford of Derby died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at Westview of Derby. He was 83.

The memorial service for Leonard Grant Rumford of Derby, formerly of Council Grove and Emporia, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Penwell-Gabel Council Grove chapel. Mr. Rumford was cremated. The family will meet friends after the service in the funeral home Community Room. The private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Mr. Rumford died Wednesday, June 27, 2007, at in Derby. He was 83.
He worked many jobs, including Edmond’s Radiator and Industrial Plastics, both in Council Grove, and Didde Glaser, Hopkins Manufacturing, Sauder Pyro Block Division and Sauder Tank, all in Emporia. Before he retired, Mr. Rumford was an inspector for Daniel’s International Construction Company at the Wolf Creek plant in Burlington. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in northern France, central Europe and the Rhineland.
The son of Elbert A. and Nettie L. Moyer Rumford, he was born Oct. 16, 1923, at Emporia.
Mr. Rumford was a former longtime member of the Masonic Lodge at Allen and the Arab Shrine in Topeka. He was active in the Bushong girls’ softball team and the Northern Heights Girls’ track team in 1967, driving them to track meets.
He is survived by two daughters, Shirley J. Kennison and Helen R. Rumford, both of Derby; one son, Michael L. Rumford of Wichita; his stepfather, Oran W. “Woody” Conrad of Estero, Fla.; one brother, Elbert Alden Rumford of Emporia; one sister, Mary L. Martin of Osage City; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
