Sister Margaret Groh, Leavenworth
Sister Margaret Groh died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at St. John Hospital in Leavenworth. She was 81.
Alice Catherine Groh was born June 28, 1925, in Emporia, one of 11 children of George Sherman and Dorothy Frietag Groh. She graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School and Emporia High School.
She entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth on Feb. 6, 1944, and made her profession of vows on Aug. 15, 1945. Sister Margaret received a bachelor’s in sociology from the University of St. Mary, a master’s of social work from the University of Michigan, and continued her professional studies at the University of Southern California and the Menninger Foundation of religion and psychology. She specialized in clinical and psychiatric social work.
Sister Margaret worked in hospitals and with Catholic Social Services in many states. Prior to her retirement to the Mother House in 2006, she maintained a private practice in Tucson, Ariz.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Francis Groh of Wichita; two sisters, Irene Marie Groh England of Dayton, Ohio, and Sister Mary Georgette Groh, SCL, of Topeka; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth, where friends may call after 4 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated in the chapel at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds.
