Margaret Lillian Jones
The funeral service for Margaret Lillian Jones was held Wednesday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, conducted by Pastor Lee Hoskins. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery south of Emporia. Mrs. Jones, who was 94, died Friday, Jan, 26, 2007, at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor.
Margaret Lillian Lewis, the daughter of Thomas Albert (Bert) Lewis and Hazel Dukes Lewis, was born Oct. 4, 1912, in Emporia. She attended the College of Emporia and graduated with a degree in education from Kansas State Teachers College.
She married David William Jones on Nov. 30, 1934, in Cottonwood Falls. He died Oct. 17, 1967. After his death, Mrs. Jones followed through on her late husband’s unfinished construction projects, then worked for 20 years at the Emporia Public Library, focusing many of her efforts on memorials to the library.
She was named “Woman of the Week” by The Gazette and was an active member of the Social Service Club, member and past president of the Trend Club, the Emporia Country Club and the Presbyterian Women.
Mrs. Jones was a direct descendant of the five Lewis brothers who came from Wales to Emporia in the late 1800s and contributed to the development of the city and the area. She made several trips to Wales and was a major participant in the annual St. David’s Day celebrations.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith K. Boehme, and a son, David C. (Charlie) Jones, both of Emporia; six grandchildren, including Cindi Lewis, Chris Yearout, Susan Jones and Teri Whitson of Emporia; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Cedric and Lawrence Jones, who died in infancy, and Thomas (Tom) W. Jones, who died in May 2006.
