Virginia Welch Forbeck, Long Beach, California

2006 - 1916

Former Emporian Virginia Welch Forbeck died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, in Long Beach, Calif. She was 90.
Miss Forbeck taught at Emporia High School from 1945 to 1957. She later taught in California, where she has lived since her retirement.
The daughter of John and Ora Forbeck, she was born Dec. 31, 1916, in Muskogee, Okla. She attended Emporia schools, graduated from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia with a bachelor’s degree and from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., with a master’s degree.
Miss Forbeck was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporia and the Leisure World Community Church in Long Beach.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary international teachers’ sorority, member and president for two years of the American Association of University Women, member of Long Beach Historical Society, California Retired Teachers’ Association, National Education Association, ESU Alumni Association and the Kansas Club of Long Beach, Calif.
She is survived by many cousins, including Leonard Brim of Hutchinson and Betty Stokes of Oklahoma City.
A sister, Iona; and a cousin, Lewis Forbeck, died earlier.
The graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Americus Cemetery at Americus. The Rev. Claudia Bakely of the First United Methodist Church will conduct the service. Friends and family may visit Charter Funerals-Emporia Chapel from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday.
