Marjorie Davies, Webster, Texas
Former Emporian Marjorie Davies died Thursday, April 12, 2007, in Webster, Texas, after a lengthy illness. She was 71.
Mrs. Davies and her husband moved to Emporia in 1987. She was a fiber artist and seamstress, and in 1990, with Carol Rhoades, she established Banners, a custom sewing studio in Emporia. At Banners, she produced appliqued wall hangings and vestments for many Emporia churches and institutions, including the Newman School of Nursing, Girl Scouts, First Presbyterian Church, Didde Catholic Campus Center and Emporia High School. Her artwork was exhibited at the Emporia Public Library and Emporia Arts Council. She also was known for her friendship and support of ESU students from Africa, whom she often invited for dinner. She moved to Friendswood, Texas, in July 2006.
The daughter of Leopold and Hilda Ortlepp, she was born Dec. 29, 1935, at Johannesburg, S. Africa. She married William George Davies on July 3, 1965, at Johannesburg and they moved to the United States four years later. He died earlier.
Mrs. Davies is survived by two sons, Thomas Davies of Kansas City, Mo., and Francis Davies of Friendswood, Texas; one daughter, Catherine Davies of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
The memorial service was held Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Nassau Bay, Texas.
