Emma Jean Mathis, Newton

Former Emporian Emma Jean Mathis of Newton died Tuesday, April 10, 2007, at Newton Medical Center. She was 78.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Petersen Funeral Home in Newton. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Lawn Cemetery at Emporia. The family will meet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions to the Center for Basic Cancer Research may be sent in care of the funeral home, 617 S. Walnut, Newton, KS 67114.
The daughter of Clyde C. and Waunetta May Pyatt Likins, she was born Feb. 11, 1929, in rural Parsons. She married Marvin Mathis on Oct. 20, 1951, at Dennis. He survives.
Mrs. Mathis is also survived by three sons, David Mathis of Hillsboro, Dan Mathis of Topeka and John Mathis of Richmond, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. A sister, Clydine Schneider, also died earlier.
